American Airlines to Boston

Although he was a native of the United States, born in Montana, Kauffer spent most of his creative years in England. Returning home for the last fifteen years of his life, he designed posters in a New York studio, where his biggest clients were book publishers and American Airlines, for whom he designed some thirty posters in a period from 1948 to 1953. These clean designs in bright colors show his expert hand with simple, powerful travel images. For example, he respectfully deconstructs the American flag to make the Boston destination stand out in stark contrast, and includes a cameoed minuteman for good measure.
